From the President

Howdy folks, time sure has a way of getting by, doesn’t it?  Seems like the North American Hair Sheep Symposium was just yesterday!  Those of you who attended had the opportunity to hear a diverse group of knowledgeable speakers.  Many thanks to all those who attended and added to the success of the symposium.

During the annual meeting of the Texas Hair Sheep Association, it was voted on to rename the group the North American Hair Sheep Association.  Since we now have members in many US states as well as Mexico, this change makes good sense.

Your Association’s booth at the symposium was a popular attraction.  Thanks to Angie Davidson for keeping it up and running and to all who bought hair sheep leather and leather products.

On Saturday following the end of the symposium, a sale of hair sheep was held.  Some great animals sold which were a worthy representation of their breeder’s program.  Buyers seemed to thin out toward the end, but for the first time, the sale seemed successful.  Suggestions for upcoming events are welcome….just contact a board member.

As you plan your New Year’s menus, why not introduce lamb to someone who hasn’t had the pleasure of experiencing the wholesome goodness of our product?  You know that you’ll be doing them, and yourselves, a favor.

May your New Year be blessed by safety and peace.

Meet the Director

Jacob Tiemann

Roscoe, Texas

My name is Jacob Tiemann.  I am currently the Agricultural Science teacher for Roscoe ISD, and I am a graduate of Texas A & M University.  I am currently serving as the Vice President of the North American Hair Sheep Association.  In my spare time I am also a farmer of cotton, wheat and until recently, alfalfa.  As we all know the farming business can be unpredictable, so in looking for ways to diversify and make the best return on my time and investment, I began looking for alternatives.  After much research and planning, I invested in my first small herd of white hair sheep, which included registered Royal White and commercial Dorpcroix. In the past two years that small herd has more than doubled.

As a member of the American Hair Sheep Association and a member of the Lamb Marketing Specialties, I encourage other members to evaluate their current marketing practices and them to consider joining the Lamb Marketing Specialties Coop.

With the outlook of the hair sheep industry and the successes of the past two years, I am proud to be a member of the North American Hair Sheep Association, and I am looking forward to additional successes in the education and promotion of hair sheep and the Association.

I would like to thank Mr. Clinton Hodges for getting the program started, and the other Board Members for their continued efforts, long hours and the many miles invested in our program.
